2008 Annual Report

Chamber 2008 Annual Report:
Leading Businesses. Leading Communities. For 92 Years.

Over the past 36 months, the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce has gone through an amazing transformation.

In 2006, the Blue Water Ambassadors group was created and our advocacy arm, the Public Affairs Committee began the successful annual State of the County Address and Candidate Rating system and we completed a makeover of the website and invested in a state-of-the-art membership database system called WebLink.

In 2007, we celebrated our 90th anniversary and received the Chamber of Commerce of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals. The Economic Task Force and Site Relocation Task Forces were created to provide a concentrated effort on business development and our relocation efforts.

In 2008, the Greater Port Huron Area Chamber changed its name to Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce to coincide with other community organizations’ work to strengthen our regional brand. We changed the name of our 501c3 fund to the Community Benefit Fund with a broader focus to support education programs, preserving natural and historic interests, and community redevelopment activities.

The Board of Directors has established five prioritized goals for 2009, and the staff in partnership with our members will keep a determined focus on meeting the needs of small business as we work through these challenging times.

Thank you for continuing to support the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce.

Sincerely,
Vickie Ledsworth
Chamber President

In-House Hospice™ Wins Detroit Free Press Top 2008 Workplace Award!
In-House Hospice, a leading hospice and palliative care provider in Michigan and Ohio was named one of the Top Work Places in 2008 by The Detroit Free Press.

In-House Hospice employees ranked their managers first in making good use of employees skills and being open and responsive to employees speaking honestly to their boss. Overall, In-House came in sixth out of 92 entries in the medium category with between 151 to 500 employees.

"At the very best organizations, such as In-House Hospice, employees really believe the organization is going in the right direction and operates by strong values and ethics," said Doug Claffey, chief executive officer of WorkPlace Dynamics.

The Free Press-WorkplaceDynamics survey involved 191 employers throughout the region that have at least 50 workers. These voluntary participants, including some nonprofit organizations, operate in a variety of industries and employ about 111,000 workers combined.

For employees at the companies and organizations surveyed, what mattered most was believing that their employer is going in the right direction, followed closely by working for an employer that operates by strong values and ethics, and having confidence in the organization's leader. In-House managers scored second in understanding what is really happening in their organization and the hospice industry and third in the direction the company is headed.

In-House Hospice is one of the leading hospice providers in Michigan and Ohio serving nearly 500 patients every day. In-House Hospice's mission is to provide the highest level of quality care to its patients and was selected by The Detroit Free Press as one of the Top Work Places of 2008 for its management team and its commitment to providing one of the best working environments in the state.

Vision 2009: Chamber Community Benefit Fund
For twenty-five years the Chamber has had a non-profit 501c3 tax exempt Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce Community Benefit Fund to support academic programs such as the Annual Academic Achievement Awards program through the Port Huron Area School District and member scholarships for Leadership Blue Water.

For 2009, our Board has established a mandate to grow the Fund to position the Chamber as a strong financial partner, so when other organizations such as the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and the Blue Water Area Convention & Visitors Bureau request our assistance to fund community and business initiatives, we can respond equally. The Chamber's goal is to raise $10,000 to support educational efforts to help sustain a viable business community.

For more information about the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce Community Benefit Fund, please contact the Chamber at (810) 985-7101.
