May is National Small Business Month!

The Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce wishes to devote the month of May to its membership as we commemorate National Small Business Month by hosting a series of events focused around its three pillars – education, advocacy, and small business development.

Beginning this week with the annual regional chamber SpeedNetworking and Business Card Exchange, networkers, sales and marketing professionals and small business owners from chambers across the county and Richmond will participate in an evening of structured and social networking on Thursday, April 30 at Golden Hawk Golf Club. If your business needs sales prospects or referral contacts, this event is for you. There are about 20 seats left for speednetworking and all registrations must be in by Wednesday.

The Chamber’s Public Affairs Committee in cooperation with the Port Huron Hospital Foundation Business & Professional Committee will host a free healthcare forum on Wednesday, May 6, 8AM in McMorran Lounge. Mr. Brian Peters, Michigan Health & Hospital Association, an expert in the field of healthcare and its economic impact in Michigan will present the facts of pending legislation, national healthcare reform and emerging trends and action steps for businesses to take in shaping the future of healthcare in Michigan.

The Education Committee will conclude its popular spring workshop series with its next event Thursday, May 7, “How to Create an Award Winning Service Culture” presented by award-winning local expert, Merideth Ryan, HR Manager of E & A Credit Union. This is a 2.5 hr lunch program held at the Great Lakes Maritime Center and registration is required by Friday, May 1. Cost to attend is $15/pp.

The Fund Development Committee will host a premier social event, Funny Business on Thursday, May 14 at McMorran Theater. Businesses can purchase corporate tables as a Center Stage Sponsor which includes four (4) dinner and show tickets and free McMorran lot parking for $300 or a full table of eight (8) for $550. Only ten tables remain unclaimed so we encourage you to respond by Friday, May 1st. Individual tickets for the 90-minute show with feature award-winning entertainer, Mat Gauthier are only $20 each. Mat’s musical impressionist comedy show offers good clean entertainment suitable for all adults.

These events are open to all Chamber members, your staff, and volunteers. Your Chamber Committees have worked hard to put together a slate of events for all business types and interests, now it’s up to you to take advantage of what we have to offer.

To register or find out more about any of the Small Business Month events, contact the Chamber, 810-985-7101.

In the Spotlight: Peacock Landscaping Goes Green with Healthy Lawn Care Program

Peacock Landscaping, a Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce member, is proud to announce a new program to help protect the Watershed. The Healthy Lawn Care Program (HLCP) for Watershed Protection is an environmentally sound lawn care program that participating members of the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) are offering. Peacock Landscaping is an endorsed Lawn Care Professional with the MGIA.

According to the MGIA web site, the Healthy Lawn Care Program has been initiated to help service company’s comply with environmentally sensitive lawn care issues, such as, the over use of fertilizers, pesticides and runoff into storm drains, lakes and/or rivers.

Tracey Peacock, co-owner of Peacock Landscaping with her husband Paul, says that with the launch of this new program, they now offer consumers additional lawn care options to protect the watershed.

Key components of the program are:

  • An initial on-site consultation
  • Soil nutrient tests offered to customers
  • Low-phosphorus or no-phosphorus fertilizer
  • Slow-release nitrogen fertilizer (50% in slow-release form)
  • Fertilizer quantities of either 2, 3 or 4 pounds per 1000 square feet of nitrogen applied over the growing season
  • Pesticide options offered: zero pesticides, spot-treatment for weeds and one-time rescue operation for weed control
  • Advice to the cutomer on proper maintenance practices such as mowing and irrigation.

SailTime Port Sanilac & Seahawk Sailing School
...making sailing easy, fun and affordable!

Sailing classes for Women and Couples!

In an effort to introduce and promote sailing to women and couples, SailTime Port Sanilac has made arrangements for Captain Josie Longo to conduct her "Two on a Boat - How to Keep it Afloat" seminar here in Michigan. Captain Josie is the inventor of the Sailing Wind Wheel (www.sailingwindwheel.com) and she is well-know for her couples and women's sailing classes (www.acss.bz).

On June 11, we will be conducting her free seminar at the Great Lakes Maritime Center (Vantage Pointe) in Port Huron. Registration will begin at 6 PM and the seminar will run from about 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The seminar will be followed by a book signing and meet the author reception. Sandwiches and beverages will be provided. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. The seminar is free to those who register by May 28th. There will be a charge of $10/person for those who are not pre-registerd. Registrations can be made by email to jkaza@sailtime.com.

The whole purpose of this seminar is to make sailing and learning sailing more comfortable to women. If you know of women that are kind of interested in sailing but have been holding back - this seminar is for them. If you know of wives that are holding back their husband from buying a boat - this seminar is for them. If you know of women who sail with their husband but really don't enjoy it - this seminar is for both of them.

We will also be doing the free seminar on June 12th somewhere in the Lake St. Clair area, followed by a Women's Only Seminar on Lake St. Clair on the 13th.

Make your sailing dreams come true. For more information, email jkaza@sailtime.com, or call (586) 778-5152.

If you have been thinking about sailing but just haven't gotten around to it, now is the time. Don't let another summer pass you by.

Good News from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital

Good news abounds for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Port Huron, beginning with the second annual Irish Tea in celebration of St. Joseph Mercy's Foundress Sister Catherine McAuley. The event was a terrific success raising $1,600 to benefit the Peoples' Clinic for Better Health.

In April, Edward Nebel, MD, was named St. Joseph Mercy Patient Focused Physician of the Month. The St. Joseph Mercy Patient-Focused Physician of the Month award highlights a physician’s commitment to working collaboratively to promote patient and community health through clinical excellence and patient-focused care. Congratulations, Dr. Nebel!

Just last week, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and its Mercy Regional Cancer Center made an very important annoucement for the community. The cancer center was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. The Mercy Regional Cancer Center is the only center in St. Clair County to receive this award; and one of only two cancer centers in the state of Michigan to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2008.

"We are exceedingly honored to be recognized for our dedication and commitment to local cancer care," comments Peter Karadjoff, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron president and CEO. "For more than a quarter of a century, St. Joseph Mercy has strived to provide the very best in cancer care to our community, knowing that patients want and need quality services close to home from the provider they know and trust. This award exemplifies that level of commitment to our patients. It is a tribute to the outstanding work of our staff and physicians, and the enduring spirit of survival offered by all cancer patients."

The Mercy Regional Cancer Center invites you to attend a FREE Skin Cancer Screening, Wednesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Women's Health Center at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Local dermatology physicians will be on hand to discuss your skin cancer concerns and provide a skin check. Appointments are limited. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 810-985-1484.

The Chamber congratulates St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for all of your recent successes!

Graduating seniors named for outstanding academic excellence!

Port Huron’s Academic Award recipients for 2009 share a common foundation: excellence in their academic achievement. One hundred thirty seven graduating seniors will be recognized by the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce and Port Huron Area School District officials at the 25th Annual Academic Awards Ceremony.

Students who receive a 3.5 or higher grade point average will receive an academic achievement certificate and a pin, bar or academic letter based on the number of years they have achieved academic excellence.

“These students worked hard and devoted themselves to their academic studies,” said Vickie Ledsworth. “While parents, families, and teachers provide invaluable support, it is the personal effort of these students that brought them success and this acknowledgement.”

Port Huron Northern will recognize 81 seniors and Port Huron High will recognize 56 seniors respectively. Parents and immediate family members are invited to attend the ceremonies and a dessert reception will be held afterward in the school cafeteria.

The Academic Achievement Awards program was founded in 1984 by the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce as one of the first of its kind to recognize students for their dedication to academic studies. The Chamber established a 501c3 Fund, now titled the Community Benefit Fund to support the program. Voluntary contributions made to the Fund by Chamber members also support scholarships for Leadership Blue Water, regional tourism marketing, and small business development.

“I am very proud to be part of this quarter century tradition that recognizes student academic achievement,” Ledsworth said. “I encourage these young people to pursue further education and to contribute to the democratic principles and economic prosperity of our state and community.”

This year’s awards ceremony and program to recognize graduating seniors from Port Huron Northern High School will be held May 4, 7-8PM in the Performing Arts Center, and Port Huron High School seniors Performing Arts Center on May 5, 7-8PM at the Performing Arts Center.

Leadership Blue Water 2009

The Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to award two Leadership Blue Water scholarships to Chamber members. Scott Shine from Blue Water Center for Independent Living and Trina Avedisian from Community Marketing Group will participate in the dynamic six-week series with 18 other participants.

The series was designed to provide leadership skills and community and political awareness for individuals who have a desire to lead. Each evening workshop will include dinner, interactive activities, leadership skill development, and discussions with community, government, and economic development leaders.

AT&T announces expansion of alternative fuel fleet

As a global communications leader, AT&T has a responsibility to manage their business in an environmentally responsive way. From rolling out alternative-fuel vehicles to exploring the role of technology in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to encouraging recycling of e-waste such as cell phones, they are committed to taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact.

They are expanding their alternative-fuel fleet to more than 15,000 vehicles by 2019. This new investment follows their deployment of 105 alternative-fuel vehicles in 2008 and an earlier trial of four hybrids 2007. Through these successful pilot programs, they have learned what mix of solutions is right for their fleet.

Their new commitment includes the following components:

  • They are replacing about 8,000 gasoline-powered vehicles with vehicles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) over the next five years. This is the largest U.S. corporate commitment to CNG vehicles to date.
  • They expect to replace 7,100 passenger cars with alternative-fuel models over the next 10 years.
The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Mich., estimates that over the 10-year deployment period, the new vehicles will save 49 million gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons. That is equivalent to removing the emissions from more than 38,600 traditional passenger vehicles for a year.
